Essay topic: A Successful Person

Prompt: Write an essay of at least five paragraphs about a person you know who has achieved success in the face of adversities.

Here are some sample essays on this topic. The first is one that I wrote about a student in one of my classes several years ago. The rest were written by students in English 3 classes. They may give you some ideas about how to develop your own essay on this topic. Some are better than others and that is one of the questions you will need to be able to discuss: What makes some of these essays better than the others? Bear that question in mind and write down some notes in answer to it while you are reading the essays.

This essay, because it is a narrative--an essay that tells a story--has a thesis statement that is implied rather than stated outright. After you have read it, write out the thesis statement that you think should be included in the introduction of the essay. How do you think Patrick was able to succeed? Whom do you know who has, similarly, had seemingly insurmountable obstacles to overcome, yet did? Is that person you, perhaps?

Read the essays below written by English 3 students about people who have overcome difficult circumstances in order to achieve their successes in life.
