Homework assignment for Thursday, 2/20/20:
- Begin the "Deep Reading" activity posted in Canvas. Look up EVERYTHING that is new to you, everything that you don't already know all about, and all "vocabulary" that he may be using in a way that is different from your understanding of the terms. This does not have to be completely finished (as in "ready for me to grade") by class time because I will have you discuss your answers in your groups. However, it will be a colossal waste of your time and your colleagues' time if you aren't well prepared. In class, I will monitor your group discussions, and if it is obvious that a group memeber is not well enough prepared to participate, that individual will be culled from the herd, to graze in his or her own pasture. No freeloaders, folks!

- Identifying ethos, pathos and logos in Orwell's famous essay "Politics and the English Language" assigment posted in Canvas
- "Deep reading" the essay. Recall lessons learned from reading his "elephant" essay--we have to know what he is talking about in order to know what he is taking about. Follow? So when was this published? What, exactly, is going on in Orwell's world at that date? Who is his intended audience? Who are the people he refers to? What do the colloquialisms mean? Etc., etc.

- In order to gain access to both The New York Times and The New York Times in Education, you must first register online. (Two separate registrations are required for each resource, although you can use the same username and password for both.) Once you have registered, you can access the New York Times by simply going to their website. https://www.nytimes.com/
- Instructions for registering can be found here: https://libguides.tncc.edu/newyorktimes I encourage you to share this website and the registration process with your students as well.
Homework assignment for Thursday, 3/26/20:
- Complete the "open-book" Deep Reading and Reasearch Quiz in Canvas about the Jeffrey Gettleman article from 11/4/2017. I was able to preview it, but not input responses as a student, so I do not know if you will have formatting functions when you type your answers in the quiz boxes. If you are not able to indent and italicize the W.C. entries, make them accurate in all other ways.
- Please heed the instructions for the quiz:1] Paraphrase from original sources rather than quoting directly. 2] Answer all questions in complete, grammatically correct, well edited sentences.
- Because we will discuss this story during class on Thurs., the quiz will time out at class time. Anyone who has not completed the quiz prior to class discussion will be required to complete it without being allowed to participate in or listen to the discussion until after the quiz is complete. It would be cheating to allow the quiz to be submitted after listening to discussion of the answers, right?

- Read "Examples of Doublespeak" from Your Dictionary.
- Cited from Chap. 3 “Who controls the past,” ran the Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” “Reality control” the Party called it, a series of victories over memory, “in Newspeak they called it doublethink." Winston Smith's job in Minitruth is to go back and change recent history (as reorted in news sources) to conform to the present Party "facts." Is this notion an imaginitive stroke of literary whimsy, or a slice right out of life? You be the judge:
