Literature: · Notebook for in-class assignments · 3 1/2 inch high-density floppy disk General Information 1. The purpose of English 112 is to improve the student's ability to think, to read, and to write through the study of short stories, poetry and drama. 2. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CLASS. To emphasize this point, I have quoted the school attendance policy from the College Catalog and Student Handbook. Please read the following passage carefully and be certain to abide by its guidelines. Regular attendance is required in all classes. When absence from a class becomes necessary, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor prior to the absence whenever possible. The student is responsible for the subsequent completion of all study missed during an absence. Any instruction missed and not subsequently completed will affect the grade of the student, regardless of the reason for the absence. It is the responsibility of each instructor to explain the attendance policy in each course that he or she teaches; this policy is within the guidelines of the Virginia Community College System and is constructively relevant to the objectives of the course. 3. IF YOU MISS MORE THAN six CLASSES, I MAY DROP YOU FROM THE COURSE. 4. Papers are due at the beginning of class on the dates indicated on the syllabus. Late Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If the instructor determines that the student has plagiarized, the student will receive a grade of 0 and will be subjected to further disciplinary action.(See The Little, Brown Handbook for further information about plagiarism.) According to the TNCC College Catalog, "Plagiarism at Thomas Nelson Community College will constitute a dismissal offense, and the use of syndicated research papers, essays, etc. constitutes a violation of this rule." 5. Please use the following format for papers. If you write in long hand, please skip every other line. Use standard composition paper. Place your name, class, and paper number on the top right hand corner of the paper and submit it in a manila folder. HOWEVER, I strongly encourage you to write your papers on word processors and to save your drafts on disks. 6. Your
grade for the course will be based on your best six papers, two exams, two
quizzes, and class participation. Each paper will count 1/12; the quiz
average will count 1/12; and each exam will count 1/6. I will record a class
participation grade which will count 1/12. This grade will be based on
attendance and on your class notebooks which I will check throughout the
semester. 7.
