Compensation for Developing a New Distance Learning Course

Faculty being "paid" (dollars or released time) to develop new distance learning courses for TNCC will:
  • have used Blackboard, the supported course management system for at lease on semester prior applying to develop a new distance learning course at TNCC.
  • submit, to the dean, the application to development a distance learning course.
  • be presented with an agreement to develop a distance learning form, by the dean, if their application is accepted.
  • will review the following documents prior to signing the agreement to develop a distance learning course
    • Virginia Community College System Guiding Principles for Implementation of the Blackboard Content System Spring 2006 (.doc) Please review the first section:  Faculty control their own Blackboard content.
    • Intellectual Property section on the TNCC DL faculty manual website: http://community.tncc.edu/faculty/smith/documents/intellectual_property.pdf
Materials developed or created while employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia are subject to Section 12, Intellectual Property of the VCCS Manual. Any materials developed or created in full or part through TNCC's Distance Learning Program should acknowledge the contribution of the college and the VCCS. TNCC will
retain a "license/permission to use" privilege in perpetuity of courses you are compensated to develop. Course developed under the agreement to develop a distance learning course allows other faculty to use any and all materials in the developed course. However, even if it is modified by another instructor the original course remains intact and the original instructor retains ownership. This means he/she could take their original course with them if they left TNCC, try to develop it commercially, etc.
  • will setup an appointment with one of TNCC's instructional designers prior to beginning designing a new distance learning course for TNCC.
