This course will examine epic, romance, and heroic quest narratives from ancient, Classical, medieval, and early modern cultures. Students' learning experiences will include lecture/briefings, film/video, students' oral presentations, in-class and on-line discussions, and field trips.

Readings from The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces
(Expanded Edition) will include selections from Gilgamesh, the Homeric Odyssey,
the Hebrew Book of Genesis, the Sanskrit Bhagavad-Gita, Ibn-Ishaq's Biography
of the Prophet Mohammed, the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf, the French Song of
Roland, Dante's Divine Comedy, Middle-English Sir Gawain and the Green
Knight, Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji, the West African Mali Epic
of Son-Jara (Sundiata), the Mexican Mayan Popul Vuh, and Cervantes Don
Quixote.
Course work includes seminar oral presentations on a selected topic, a site-visit report of the Chrysler Museum or other cultural collection, a non-fiction article review, a review of a live world-culture performance, and two exams (midterm and final). Students will also use the course's Web site to find relevant background information and will participate in weekly on-line discussion forums. (World-Wide Web access will be provided by the college for students who do have this resource otherwise.)
Survey of World Literature
fulfills a literature survey requirement or a humanities requirement at TNCC.
Students need to have completed ENG 112 (College Composition II) or its equivalent in
order to take the course. The course may be taken out of sequence.
