Notes:
One of the more important recent studies is Brown and Duguid’s review of organizations and information. They debunk all the facile, shallow management fantasies about “information workers” and “information economies” and “learning organizations” and “re-engineering,” taking on the cyber dreams of “office-less offices” and “telecommuting.” They underscore the messy, convoluted ways in which knowledge is shared and constructed in the process of complex, physical, social interactions. “Instructional delivery” and “course content” and “outcomes assessment” are largely management fantasies about subtle, social processes. Community college students would seem to be particularly in need of rich forms of socialization.
