Abstract: The opportunity to explore new technologies at the service of teaching and learning and to extend the college’s reach to students living at a distance from the main campus or whose complex lives made regular campus attendance difficult motivated my development of two on-line projects: an on-line option for a technical writing course that also met in a regular classroom and an exclusively on-line two-semester literature survey course. What I observed is that most students who initiated the courses did not complete them productively. The college’s limited resources have precluded the implementation of a multi-skilled cyber-course development team in order to make use of dominant learning modes theories. As a result, the courses have been weighed heavily in favor of self-directed verbal learners (who probably do not represent the majority of community college students). On-line course implementation requires a collaborative effort among faculty, instructional designers, media designers, technical support, Web masters, and generous hardware resources.
