Teaching Philosophy

I take my cue from Gotthold Lessing, 18th century German dramatist and philosopher.  Hannah Arendt says of him, "Lessing scattered (his thoughts) into the world not intending to communicate conclusions, but to stimulate others to independent thought."

I believe this is a necessary aspect to teaching the Humanities.  While the historical-data component is essential to understanding the past, it is through an appreciation of Lessing's profound consideration of universal truths that, I think, students avoid futures of intellectual stagnation.  I want them to remain curious and optimistic.  I want them to fully embrace their present Humanities time period, stimulating the thinking of those who will tomorrow study and learn from us.

I genuinely care about my students.  I attempt to keep my teaching style fluid in a desire to make the classroom experience both rich and rewarding for every student and learning style
