Implementing Learning Communities in the VCCS Tidewater Region Colleges (Room 2407)
Presenters: This panel will include presenters from Thomas Nelson, TCC-Norfolk and TCC-Portsmouth, who will outline the approaches to Learning Communities which they are developing at their colleges.  The last 20 minutes will allow time for an open forum for questions and  a “best practices” discussion.

This will be a participatory workshop, and we hope that everyone who attends will have something to contribute that can be described briefly and adapted to a variety of purposes.  Here are some examples from the VCCS journal Inquiry.

Raising Learning Effectiveness in Math and OTHER Classrooms: The Landmark Experience

This session will present numerous teaching strategies that put the responsibility for attending, learning, and succeeding squarely on the shoulders of the students in your classes.

Classroom Strategies that Match What We Already Know About Effective Learning (Room 2407)
Presenter: Susan Coffey, Emeritus VCCS Director of Professional Development
From a list of 14 well-known quotations/sayings, participants will identify and discuss principles of effective learning, create or share practical classroom applications, and develop a personalized checklist to use to access current teaching practices.
