Week 1

Note on Grading: From Chapter 6 to the end of the e-book, I will record points for your Aplia lesson scores from each chapter as follows:

  • 85% and above = 3 points
  • 70-84% = 2 points
  • 60-69% = 1 point.

These are opportunities for accumulating significant point totals, in that an essay grade can total 6 points, so reading two chapters and acing them will earn the equivalent of the max points on an essay. Dive deep!

Have fun with this reading environment!

Thursday 8/29/13
In-class activities: 1] Read part of Chap 1 together and get familiar with the MindTap "apps" features, marking text, read/speaker, etc. 2] Register for access to Aplia for Basic Writing 1 editing and grammar lessons, and do the tutorial lessons and the diagnostic test. Note: you will not get graded instantly on the diagnostic, nor will you be able to select different answers if you are incorrect, so pay close attention to the questions.

Homework for Thursday 9/5
Type, revise and edit your in-class paragraph summarizing the NHLP according to Smilkstein's description of how we learn.
Write a separate paragraph of about 150-200 words. Think about a skill, activity, or body of knowledge you have mastered which you have learned outside of school. Describe how you learned that skill through the six stages of the NHLP; i.e., what did YOU do in each stage of the NHLP--your motivation, how you began to practice, how you developed the ability, how you knew you had reached skillfulness, etc.

Thursday 9/5/13 1] Finish the syllabus, 2] Discuss the two paragraphs. 2] Reconstruct "What I have Lived For," Bertrand Russell's 5-paragraph theme which introduces his autobiography.

Homework for Tuesday 9/10
Compose another paragraph about the NHLP. Here is the topic sentence: "Another thing I learned from Smilkstein's research is that emotions affect learning. What she means by that is ---------------------." In the rest of the paragraph you will SHOW how YOU will use this knowledge (that emotions control our ability to learn) in specific learning situations. These may be test-taking, speech-making, studying, participating in class, conferencing with your instructor, working through your computer activities in MathLab or Aplia, etc. To draw on specific examples, think about times that you have already experienced in learning situations where you NOW know that you could not perform well because of the pressence of stress

Write! After finishing the third body paragraph, revise the paragraphs into an essay by adding a good introductory paragraph and a good concluding paragraph.
Type, proofread, edit your 5-paragraph essay. Bring a printed copy of it with you to class on Tuesday and bring it with you in electronic copy saved in at least two different places.

Draft two paragraphs, one will be about a person you know who plays the Victim role, the second will be about a person you know who is a Creator. Through specific, concrete examples of things these individuals say or do, or have said or have done, SHOW that each is a Victim or a Creator. The paragraphs should be about 150-200 words in length (each).
Correct your answers on the Chap 2 test which were incorrect IF you got a 1 or 0 points on it. If you got 2 points, good on ya for taking good notes, Mate.

Revise and edit (or simply finish) the paragraph we began in class: How to be a Creator in your role as a student
Due on Thursday, 3 paragraphs: #1 describes a Creator you know, #2 describes a Victim you know, #3 Describes yourself as a Creator. Remember, that "Creator" and "Victim" describe our attitudes about ourselves and about life. What will/should you do about your attitude or your mindset in order to act as a Creator? This reading and these videos will help illustrate what I mean about changing your attitude to change your results. View and read them!

Thursday 9/26/13

OWL stands for Online Writing Labs--handbooks, workbooks, help desks. My favorite on-line handbook/workbook is also linked here. It is the Guide to Grammar and Writing.

Homework assignment for Thursday, 11/7/13:
Finish your grammar notes activity that we began together in class. If you wish to collaborate with your colleagues, you may do so face-to-face by meeting together, or on line by posting your document on Google Docs and giving your colleagues access to it by using their email addresses. OR you may finish it on your own.
Do this sentence patterns activity, following the instructions on the page.

7 test.
2] Only eight folks have done the Chapter 8 Aplia lessons;
that does not mean, however, that all eight have read the Chapter, so we will start at square one with Chapter 8. Before previewing Chapter 8, with headsets on, view Steve Piscitelli's video about SQ4R reading and notetaking method as a way to preview some of what is covered in Chapter 8. Take notes from Steve's video.
3] Preview Chapter 8,
per Dr. Piscitelli's advice in his SQ4R video and write your preview notes in Cornell format. Remember to view the flashcards, skim the table of contents for the chapter and write down anything you don't already know about in your notes, then skim the pages of the e-book looking at headings, specialized text face, breakers or sidebars, etc. to focus on the most important elements in the Chapter, Write down anything that you don't know in the cues column of your Cornell notes so that, while reading the chapter, you can complete your notes, either on your handwritten Cornell notes pages or by using the annotation and note-taking tools of the MindTap reading environment.

Revise, document, proofread, edit and, in general, perfect the essay on adopting the Creator mindset OR on the myth and solution to the problem of multitasking. Be sure to use PaperRater to get feedback on your prose, and Natural Reader to hear what it sounds like, listening closely for diction errors such as verb tense shifts and subject / verb and pronoun / antecedent errors.

--Week Fifteen--

Tuesday, 12/3/13
In-class workshop: 1] Work on your webfolios. Share best practices you have discovered or developed. What cool or unexpected results have you achieved so far in your webfolio development? 2] Mini-conferences with Mr. D. on the professional communication essays. 3] Finish revising/PROOFREADING/editing "Creator mindset" essay or the multi-tasking/time-management essay (whichever you chose to write.)

Due Thursday 12/5: Final essay (Creator mindset or multi-tasking/time management)

Web folio content:

  1. Your welcome page with at least one visual and brief information about you and about the purpose of this web folio. Also, link it to our class page for this semester, and include a table of contents feature that links to the other essays and sample paragraphs in the web folio
  2. The correctly documented paragraph which summarizes Chapter 2 from Smilkstein's book, Born to Learn: . . .
  3. The NHLP essay itself (including the summary paragraph), revised, edited, correctly documented
  4. A paraphrasing example from the Professional Communication essay, the paragraph which paraphrases Adams and Weins; revised, edited, correctly documented
  5. The essay on the importance of communicating as a professional in the workplace
  6. A paragraph exemplifying your ability to do direct quoting: This is the paragraph from your Creator/Victim essay in which you include a direct quote from David Mirman's article. If you wrote the multi-tasking topic instead, then include a direct quote from the source in one of your summary paragraphs, and post that paragraph separately. This, also, will be correctly documented with the verbatim quote, parenthetical citation, and the works cited entry
  7. A correctly documented and well edited essay on adopting the Creator mindset in order to be successful as a college student

In-class: Webfolio workshop. Correct/edit your returned papers and add the materials which are required to be in the webfolios. Check your works cited entries and your parenthetical citations by using the Norton Quick-Access Toolbar.

--Week Sixteen: Finals Week--

Final: Edit/correct your final essays and post the corrected version in your webfolios. The webfolio IS your "final test." It is due at the end of class today.
