ASL 101-102 : AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I-II(replaces SCM 100 and SCM 110)
(3 credits/3 credits) Prerequisite(s): Must be taken in sequence. ENG 05 is required by individual student’s placement.
Introduces the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) used by the Deaf Community, including basic vocabulary, syntax, fingerspelling, and grammatical non-manual signals. Focuses on communicative competence. Develops gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement. Introduces cultural knowledge and increases understanding of the Deaf Community. Lecture 3 hours per week.
ASL 115 : Fingerspelling and Number Use in ASL(replaces SCM 115)
(2 credits) Prerequisite(s): ASL 101 or permission of instructor.
Provides intensive practice in comprehension and production of fingerspelled words and numbers with emphasis on clarity and accuracy. Focuses on lexicalized fingerspelling and numeral incorporation as used by native users of American Sign Language. Lecture 2 hours per week.
ASL 201 : American Sign Language III(replaces SCM 200)
(3 credits) Prerequisite(s) ASL 102.
Develops vocabulary, conversational competence, and grammatical knowledge with a total immersion approach. Introduces increasingly complex grammatical aspects including those unique to ASL. Discusses culture and literature. Contact with the Deaf Community is encouraged to enhance linguistic and cultural knowledge. Lecture 3 hours + lab 1 hour = 4 hours per week.
